Classes and workshops to groups, professionals, and all interested parties are also offered. CEU credits are available to medical professionals completing this hospice training course. Kitty Norris is an experienced volunteer and Certified Teacher for the DyingConsciously.org project of the nonprofit Institute for Energy Medicine. "Radiant Visions: Huichol Indian Art," a bilingual exhibition
at Ukiah's Grace Hudson Museum, will open on Saturday, October 27 at 2
p.m. with a reception featuring a slide show and lecture by guest curator
Isabel Jordan. The Huichol believe that everything in their natural environment is alive and capable of feeling and action. Through their shamans the Huichol send prayers and petitions to a multitude of personified nature deities who govern such things as animals, water, weather, and plants. Huichol shamans are the teachers, guides, and mediators between the natural and the supernatural realms. To be a shaman is both a privilege and a demanding responsibility. Shamans conduct rituals to ensure the health and welfare of their communities and perform sacred chants recounting Huichol ancestral mythology. All Huichol ceremonial life centers on the sacred peyote cactus that is used in rituals to contact the spirit world. Huichol shamans obtain their power from these ceremonies and from the peyote visions they experience. Huichol art, both two-dimensional yarn paintings and three-dimensional masks and sculptures, uses ancient symbols to represent these spirits, to tell the cosmic drama of creation, and to document age-old Huichol traditions. With no written language, Huichol people rely on various types of artwork to maintain and communicate their beliefs and myths. While Huichol Indian art has become popular among collectors of folk art around the world, few outsiders know much about the world of its creators and their complex spiritual heritage. This exhibit provides an unusual glimpse into that world. The pieces on display are from the collection of Isabel Jordan of Yelapa, Mexico, and her daughter, Gail Meyer, of Boonville. On moving to Mexico more than thirty years ago, Jordan became interested in Huichol people and their culture. She has established long-term ties with many Huichol artists, and helps to preserve their traditional way of life by buying their art and selling it for them at galleries and exhibitions she has mounted in Canada, Europe, throughout the U. S., and now in Ukiah, California. Sherrie Smith-Ferri, director of Grace Hudson Museum, considers the museum fortunate to be able to collaborate with Isabel Jordan and Gail Meyer on this exhibit. ³It is a treat to hear Isabel describe the artists and their work in such personal terms. She provides an entrée into a fascinating world where deer speak, wolves turn into people, feathered arrows carry prayers, serpents bring rain, and shamans play the violin.² The public is invited to come to the opening on Oct. 27 to talk with Jordan and Meyer and to enjoy the artwork. ³Radiant Visions: Huichol Indian Art² will be on view at the museum until Sun., Jan. 13, 2008. Grace Hudson Museum is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 10-4:30 and Sunday, 124:30. It is located at 431 S. Main St., behind the Sun House (Grace and John Hudson¹s historic home), and it is part of the City of Ukiah¹s Community Services Department. International Peace Day Connect to your inner peace, set a strong intention and attract personal and World Peace! Triple Trinity Temple of the Arts along with Shaman Kitty Norris will be hosts to a praying ritual of transformation in the Inka tradition known as a Despacho Ceremony. This ceremony connects all of us worldwide who work for and foster peace as the chosen way of being and living. Please join us on this special day and bring a rainbow peace flag to hang if you like. If you cannot be with us physically, hang a rainbow flag, and/or join with us in prayer and intent. What is a Despacho Ceremony? It is a praying ritual of transformation, with specific healing intentions such as bringing balance and harmony to the Mother Earth, an honoring of new beginnings, and the ridding of dis-ease. The despacho has its origins from the Shamans and Medicine Persons of the Andes. Each participant will be asked to set their own personal and global intentions and then add them to the despacho. Because we will be linked with this energy from all over the planet, time is stepped up; our awareness is heightened and our ability to manifest is greatly magnetized. The ceremony brings participants into alignment with their personal intent, local group intent, global intent, and gratitude to the earth, which supports all of us in all of our endeavors. When the despacho is finished, it is traditionally offered to the fire, the water or the earth and tended to only by the Shaman. It is our intention for our Shaman Kitty to make the offering in a fire ceremony that evening. What is a despacho? It is a colored assembly of natural material such as corn, beans, rice, flowers, leaves; metaphorically representing everything sacred and life giving, such as the elements, the weather, the clouds around mountains, rainbows, the four directions, lakes, rivers and streams, the fruits of our labors, the sun, moon, earth and stars. The despacho becomes filled with intent for connecting to the Earth Mother and the Cosmos, and affects the totality of energy in the universe. What is International Peace Day? The Hague, (also referred to as the International City of Peace), in the Netherlands is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Second World Peace Conference.
